If We Make It Home A Novel of Faith and Survival in the Oregon Wilderness Christina Suzann Nelson 9780825444951 Books

We meet three college room-mates almost 25 years after college.
Ireland - a "hippie" college professor; environmentalist; strict vegan who seems haunted by the past.
Jenna - an overweight housewife; slightly depressed as her triplets have left home. She seems stuck in the past.
Victoria - a perfectionist with a seemingly perfect marriage; home; children and ministry until one email cracks the facade and brings it all crashing down to the realization she was perhaps happier in the past.
Due to unique circumstances all three find themselves back at the final reunion of their college house before it shuts down for good. They discover that they don't have anything in common anymore and desperately seek out the fourth roommate who they all consider to be the one that binds them together, only to discover she has passed away.
Shocked they part ways and unknown to each other all sign up for the same survival week group. Each one has her own reason for participating and are not happy seeing the others.
On the second day things take a dramatic turn as their guide suddenly dies leaving them alone and lost in the wilderness.
During this time, each woman is brought to her lowest point, her weaknesses and insecurities broken and exposed but through this brokenness she gains insight into herself; her true worth and what her path forward will be.
This was a very meaningful read for me; showing that at your lowest point, you haven't been deserted by God, but just being molded & reformed.

If We Make It Home A Novel of Faith and Survival in the Oregon Wilderness Christina Suzann Nelson 9780825444951 Books Reviews

Loved it! I am a very picky reader and it takes a lot to keep me intereested. This is one of those unique, engaging and suspenseful books that drew me in and I couldn’t put it down! Loved the characters, the adventure, the lessons, the heart and the humor. I could relate to each of the main characters and walked away challenged. I highly recommend this book. Hoping this author puts another book out soon!
What are the secrets of your past, that you thought were long buried, but continue to steer your life's course? What would it take to see them for what they are, bury them for good, and make the changes you need to make? Three women find that staring down death in the wilderness offers the opportunity to see the truth.
The book flips back and forth in life experiences of three former roommates that reveal their disappointment of themselves and lead to judgmental opinions between them after 25 years away from each other. The author does good character description of each but quite unrealistic and unending traumas as they get lost in the Oregon Wilderness.
The plot of the book was very good, but switching between characters every few pages left me confused about which character was speaking. It needed more character development so the reader could get to know each person without having to flip back to find out who was speaking. Good story, though about Pacific NW.
A truly beautifully written book of life changing awareness and learning the truth about oneself. So often we think we are in control of our lives and fail to see God's handiwork. When one gets down to the barest of a situation, seeing God's hand at work brings comfort and joy. Christina tells her story, gently weaving God in the details just as life does.
It's more than just three college friends who lost touch with each other getting together when their university is about to be closed. After these women get together, they decide to go on a wilderness journey and that's when things get exciting yet adventurous. Even during their lowest moments, there were elements of humor.
I will certainly read more of Christina's books.
This book caught my attention right from the start and sailed along without getting dry. I'm not a reader by nature but I had a hard time putting this down. Of course, I'm big on a survivalist lifestyle so that part was very interesting. I read once that a good writer puts all the characters in a tree, then sets it on fire. This fit that perfectly. Just one problem after the next but with a faith in God that pulled them along (sometimes drug them along). I like how the author separated each character. I related to each of these characters personally in some way so it was like meeting up with friends. If you want a fast-paced, adventure-filled book to read, this is it.
